Portola and surrounding area is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. With four distinct seasons, you can’t get more outdoor with all of the mountain biking, hiking, fishing, boating, golfing, snow shoeing, snowmobiling, and off-road adventures in one place.

 

IN THE WATER AND OUT

 

Gold Lake

Located in the Lakes Basin Recreation Area, Gold Lake is one of many glacially formed lakes found in the basin. Among the largest, Gold Lake, Upper and Lower Sardine Lakes, and Packer Lake are popular for all water sports.

 

Lake Davis

Located seven miles north of Portola, Lake Davis offers many activities both on and off the water. From mountain bike races, fishing tournaments to camping and wildlife viewing, this lake has a vast variety of activities.

 

Frenchman Lake

Located 30 miles northwest of Reno, Frenchman Lake has twenty-one miles of shoreline and offers all types of water sports from fishing, kayaking, canoeing, water and jet skiing and more.

FISHING

 

The area is abundant for great fishing holes. From lakes to streams, drop your line and catch Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout Catfish, Bass and Mackinaw. Check out a list of stocked lakes and stocking schedules through the Department of Fish & Game.

 

MOUNTAIN BIKING

 

With some of the most epic bike-accessed scenery found anywhere, check out these hot spots in Mills Peak, Lake Davis and the Lake Basin Recreation Area. Check out the Sierra Buttes Stewardship for maps, locations and more information about the world-class events like the Downieville Classic, Grinduro and Lost & Found Gravel Grinder. GOLFING

 

Known for their spectacular backdrops, the golf courses here are as enjoyable to play, as they are to experience. From 9-hole to championship 18-hole courses, golfers can choose between some the finest in the High Sierra.
